In large animal medicine, there are a multitude of cases encountered every day and for which the Air-cow cushion allows a real optimization of the success of the treatment. This system is very effective in the recovery of various pathologies:

Hypocalcemia (milk fever), hypophosphoremia, and hypomagnesemia

These deficiencies generally prevent animals from getting up or cause them to fall. The advantage of the Air-Cow system is to place the animal in the device “safely” while receiving the necessary veterinary care.

In this way, all the complications associated with repeated falls, the worsening of injuries caused by unsuccessful lifting attempts and the resulting pain are avoided.

This completely eliminates numbness, which is the main complicating factor in recumbency. Air-cow can be used just as easily for a cow lying in the stable in the winter as in the summer in the meadow.

Sciatic syndrome and traumatic births

Parrowing can regularly cause complications. One of the most frequent is the lack of space in the genital tract, during the passage of the calf: this leads to inflammation of the genital tract but also and especially of the pelvis, of the nerves that run through it, and then to paralysis of the hind limbs, which despite adequate treatment can take days before resolving.

This then leads to other complications caused by a prolonged recumbency and is often fatal to large animals.

Air-cow makes it possible to maintain the animal in a physiological position, the time necessary for recovery and the disappearance of the edema and therefore ultimately increases its chances of recovery.

Septic shocks

A common pathology and often following mastitis or metritis in cattle, septic shocks cause extreme states of stress and high fevers, a cessation of ingestions and therefore a drop in blood potassium, which leads to a lying position and an inability to lift.

Although the evolution of the disease can be stopped via adequate antibiotic treatment and infusion, the resulting complications (anorexia and hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, hypophosphoremia, appearance of bedsores, wounds, etc.) remain problematic.

The Air-cow cushion, by keeping the animal upright, is very useful since it makes it possible to optimize an often expensive treatment (antibiotic therapy, fluidotherapy, NSAIDs, etc.).

The Air-CoW system will make it possible to limit the consequences of prolonged recumbency on the animal and will greatly increase the chances of recovery if the primary infection is treated successfully.

In current practice, field veterinarians are regularly called in for this type of pathology (cow with septic mastitis lying down) and very often we manage to treat the pathology, but 3 or 4 days later we still have to euthanize the animal, despite the success of the treatment simply, despite the success of the treatment, because it is no longer able to get up (prolonged recumbency).

Fractures (calves)

Some fractures such as those of the pelvis and femur are unfortunately not absorbable via a plaster cast or a splint.

The Air-cow device makes it possible to keep them in a physiological situation for the time necessary for bone resorption, instead of euthanizing them as is often the case today.

NB: we tested a prototype designed for animals between 100 and 300 kg thanks to which we were able to successfully treat basin/femur fractures in calves.

Well-being when transporting injured animals

The transport of injured animals, unable to get up or move, is often done with the means at hand by attaching the animal and towing it mechanically, often traumatic even if it is involuntary.

The use of the Air-cow device, during these particular situations, makes it possible to considerably reduce the stress as well as the injuries associated with this type of situation.
